You must have noticed billboards on the highways, posters in the railways and inside the trains, while surfing the net or when visiting the malls or shopping complex. All such advertisements seen are to make the customers aware of different products under a particular brand, or the launch of a new product and generate potential buyers. Advertising helps create awareness among masses. The purpose of advertising may also be to reassure employees or shareholders that a company exists or is successful.

Advertising is a marketing tool that is becoming impossible to avoid in everyday life and can range from subtle word of mouth strategies to media campaigns. Advertisement also is used to inform masses about various socially relevant factors such as employment, upcoming events, contests or elections etc. Generally advertisements are prepared in a way that they attract the attention of the intended parties easily, by making use of catchy words, taglines or phrases interesting visuals, colours and themes.

 

Educational Qualification:

For a person intending to make a career in advertising can pursue either Diploma or Degree or Post Graduate (Degree /Diploma). Apart from the degree, they could also get themselves well equipped with latest’s computer techniques, courses in animations and graphics. Most advertising agencies recruit candidates with a formal management or advertising qualification. However, in small agencies it is still possible to make an entry without this, and spend about six months to a year’s learning on-the-job and then move on to a bigger agency after a few years of experience.

The job in this field is categorized into two broad areas, Executive and Creative. The Executive Department includes Client Servicing, Market Research and Media Research and the Creative department includes Copywriters, Scriptwriters, Visualizers, and Photographers and so on.

 

Advertising firms think up advertising campaigns, to create advertising materials, and to produce advertisements, whether that means laying out a magazine ad, taping a television commercial, or coding a banner ad for a website. Advertising profession is not a job having fixed working hours. One would have to work round the clock and most importantly have to be different at all times. A person in this profession would require thinking differently always but keeping in mind the audiences it wishes to target.

 

Advertising plays many roles apart from just selling the product to a customer. It helps the company build an everlasting customer towards their products and helps creating goodwill for the company and gains customer loyalty. Advertising helps producers or the companies to know their competitors and plan accordingly to meet up the level of competition. Moreover Advertising is important for the society. It helps in educating people and fight against social issues like child labour, addiction, female infanticide etc.

Since advertisement is a form of message to the masses, it has to be catchy, whereby using colorful visuals, jingles or taglines, which the customer would recall when there is a need of the product. It should leave an impact in the mind of the customer, such that even if they hear the tune or see an icon, they are able to associate with the brand immediately. Advertising simply put is telling and selling the product.
